If this becomes the replacement there's more I can do to improve it. eg: I'd give the colour scheme a kick etc.

Of note is the notification system is obviously far more impressive and tailorable than the old forum, and the mobile version (Android/IOS) is also very good!

And as regards the adverts shown, I'd need to pay to upgrade the hosting to remove those, but that an outstanding matter... But so far I can't say they've been obtrusive.

Will you be importing a greatest hits of threads into the new forum if possible?

Also whats the situation with server space? I did a quick search and came back with that this is a buy tokens for features set up but couldn't find current pricing.

If there's any obvious threads that stand out on the old forum that deserve to come across please do link to them and at the very least I'll post them over here in effect to save them.

The "tokens" you mention are how this host handle upgrages to their packages. You buy their tokens and then spend them to get features. At the moment, this forum is on the free package. The next major package up is about £50/yr which then most significantly allows the removal of adverts, and also for the "Forumotion" link on the top bar to be repurposed to link to this forum.

^ Sorry! I wasn't very clear there! By bring a post across I mean I'd post basically a single post on the new forum to bring a topic over if it's possible. Where a thread on a previous forum had pages of various posts I can't see how I could achieve that Sad

eg: I don't see how I could bring over 100 pages for the rate the last movie thread Sad

Interesting - I think that server error on the old site/forum has gone.

I hit a total brick wall with the hosting company refusing to accept it was anything hardware/config wise on their side causing that intermittent error, and instead they kept saying it was just down to me using a very old version of PHP (version 5) instead of an up to date version (version 7). In the end they actually stopped even answering my questions on the matter Shocked

But even if that issue is resolved, I don't think it probably changes things overall as:-
1) They did keep saying they were going to drop support for PHP version 5, and that old version of the VBulletin forum supposedly cannot run un der PHP 7. So it'll die. I'll need more confirmation on that from the hosting company.
2) The overall cost of the hosting - I can't justify numerous hundreds of pounds a year. I'll see if I can get a rough quote of what they think next year's renewal will be (renewal is every 2yrs), but if last year's increase and battle over pricing was anything to go by... Rolling Eyes

While the technical problem (server error) seems to have stopped on the old forum, this happened of its own accord while for weeks the hosting company said it was down to the old version of PHP the forum runs on (V5.2). They also said they will stop supporting that old version of PHP (V5.2) soon, moving to V7.2. The VBB forum cannot run on anything beyond V5.2 I believe.

Add to that the insane price increase of hosting - hundreds of £/$ a year - it's look likely that unless anything changes, I will have to turn the lights off on all the old HPotD site, potentially leaving just this forum.

Nothing is definite mind.. But that's the likely events.

Well, if the old place is costing too much, to hell with it. You don't get enough traffic to justify shelling out hundreds every year for it. There's nothing wrong with here anyway. Seems to be ok so far.

FYI - I've noticed in the last couple of weeks that email notifications for thread replies are winding up in my spam folder.

I presume it's something to do with all that bloody gubbins lower down those emails, which have links to news articles and such triggering the spam filters?

I have done, but I'd also done that yesterday and it still put new email notifications into spam - so perhaps it's down to those external news links or accompany images changing within the emails?

Either way, I'm keeping an eye on it and telling my email that they're NOT spam.
